It is funny how now a days our country or society say one thing but promote the other. For instance, we wanted you to be health and exercise because the risk of heart disease, stoke, diabetes…etc. Then you go to the grocery store and the healthy food is the highest. Lord knows if you are poor then it is really rough because you are living day for day and getting what you can afford. Just an observation people. That is a topic within itself.
I was browsing through Espn’s website like I usually do and on there are some NBA’s players who are stars on their teams and now have become free agents. In layman’s terms, it is time for them to re-up and get bigger money. Most of the time this is the case. Some of these contracts are ridiculous and unbelievable. All that money to play a sport.
Now people I am not 6-5 or athletic for that reason so someone just might suggest that I am a hater or jealous. Just maybe so but I am just talking about what I have observe. It probably would be different if I was getting that multi-million dollar contract to support generations of my family. That would be nice because every tangible item I wanted or my family and friends wanted I could provide. Just sounds like a dream come true.
You know I like Oprah and my hat goes off to her helping African American children and men and women for that matter. Her giving has truly been amazing to me and I encourage other to follow that have money. I once read she said that she was not going back to any more inner city schools. She said the children ask for ipods and stuff like that but in the schools in African the children ask for books and school uniforms…etc. Of course, those was not the exact words but you know the gist of what she stated.
The same stuff that she and many stars or celebrities perpetuate there is no wonder why children want material possessions. When you can just give your girlfriend Gaye a million dollars to make her a millionaire like you, DAMN what can be said. Yes, she did give it and that do stands for something I just had a problem with the statement she made. I still like Oprah. My whole point is you can’t fault the children, especially the condition from which they come from to thirst and lust after material items. We see you on TV in Bentley’s, Phantom’s, clothes long enough to dress your whole audience and jewel that can pay our salary for 5 years. I am not faulting the stars for purchasing what they want but I am faulting them for making statements like she made and for saying it is not about money. YES THE HELL IT IS! Period! Regardless of what anyone say and I can understand it for what it is. Jim Jackson the basketball player who was in the NBA at this time, he came to a basketball camp for one of his former teammates. He talked to the kids and made that statement it is not all about money. MAN GET THE F’K OUTTA HERE! That same dude was holding out at the time to get paid.
I am not knocking the athletes because I say get your money homey. That is straight up! These teams generate billions of dollars off of these players and you can’t let the owners pimp you like that. I remember Carlos Boozer becoming a free agent and the Cleveland Cav’s was going to turn back around to sign him. That was the plan to let him be a free agent for a few days or whatever but it did not work out like that. During that time as a free agent Carlos Boozer back door them and sign with the Utah Jazz for more money. I do not fault Carlos because it is a business and if it was vice verse the owners or management would have did the same thing. Somebody had the nerve to say why did he do that blind man (the owner of the majority stake) like that. That blind man did not get any where from making a decision on loyalty but on dollars. That is just the truth. All I say Mr. Boozer good for you.
I always or use to say do something that you love or good at which I still somewhat agree, but not fully. It is hard to do that something when it do not provide finances necessary for you and your family to survive. Someone once told me that I should have chose a more lucrative major and go back to school and get that type of degree that will give you more money. At the time I thought it was kind of vain but there is some reality to it. If you know me then you know I am not all about the dollars.
We promote education and I am a very strong advocate for education too. They say be a teacher, doctor, lawyers or whatever but then you see how much money athletes, stars and celebrities are making, then it makes you want to rethink your dream as a child. How can you not expect a child to want to play in the NBA, NFL or MLB? Hell, being a teacher will not get your whole family out of the Projects. In some teachers case it is probably hard to provide food on the table for a night’s dinner.
There are good teachers as well as bad teachers. Some teachers going through a lot to get paid peanuts. Of course, some are doing well and that is because of their spouses and we know two incomes are better than one. It is just strange how we as a society call ourselves promoting education or fields that are non-athletic or entertaining but those are the ones at the top of the money hierarchy. It just seems somewhat like a paradox to me.
I do believe education is the one of the keys to poverty because everybody will not make it as an athlete or entertainer. That is just the truth of the matter. Some of us are bless with more physical talent or a gift to entertain others. I really want my children to choose their own path in life. I do not think anything is wrong with sports or entertaining field because I watch both myself. I just find it strange the type of message that society is sending and promoting. I know there is some self gratification you can get out of doing your job which is great because I know everything is not about the old mighty dollar. I once heard somebody say if you are good at what you do and enjoy it then you will eventually get paid from it. I do not know about that completely but there are the possibilities. It will make life more simple if you find that one career you like or enjoy because it will be a career and not a job.
